The Facts...

ATTENTION DEFICIT HYPERACTIVITY DISORDER
is more commonly known as ADD, or ADHD.
It is a chronic condition that affects 5 out of every 100 children.
For a child to be diagnosed, signs and symptoms
of this disorder must appear before the age of 7.
There are three main signs (or symptoms) of ADHD:
Problems with paying attention (inattention),
Being very active (hyperactivity),
Acting before thinking (impulsivity).
Based on these symptoms, three types of ADHD have been found:
INATTENTIVE type- the child cannot seem to get focused or stay focused on a task or activity
HYPERACTIVE-IMPULSIVE type- the child is very active and often acts without thinking
COMBINED type- the child is inattentive, impulsive, and also hyperactive.

These behaviors can cause a child to have many problems at home, at school, and with friends. As a result, many children with ADHD feel anxious, insecure, and depressed. These feelings are NOT symptoms of ADHD, they come from the repeated problems these kids have to deal with in their home and school life.
I feel it is NOT necessary to remind you of the many different signs and symptoms a child with ADHD may be exhibiting. As I mentioned already, chances are if you are viewing this website your child is a teenager who already has a diagnosis of ADHD. You already are aware of the specific symptoms your child is personally facing.

The Causes...

The exact cause of ADHD still remains a mystery, despite all of the current research. Brain scans have revealed differences in the structure and the brain activity in children with ADHD. ADHD is hereditary, meaning parents with ADHD have a greater chance of having a child with ADHD. Pregnant women who smoke, drink, or use drugs are at an increased risk of having children with ADHD. Preschool aged children exposed to certain environmental toxins are at an increased risk for developmental and behavioral problems.(such as ADHD). Food additives such as preservatives and artificial coloring may also contribute to hyperactive behavior, but does not cause it .

Since doctors and psychiatrists care for our children by following a "medical" model, to them medicine is always the best way to treat symptoms and behaviors.
Although these approaches sometimes yield positive benefits,
medication may only "mask" the problems rather than correct the underlying causes.
In our society, most people feel that the doctor knows best, and as a parent we should usually follow what is recommended to provide our children with the best outcome.
Speaking as an educated parent I feel that this is NOT always true!
There is so much more we can be doing for our children;
other than just giving them the pills that a doctor prescribes.
I am NOT advising any parent to remove their child from medications prescribed by a physician.
I AM advising every parent to explore different ways to assist your child to live a happier and healthier life.
